Mattober Fest 2014

Matthew Noel

Life has been going so fast and I figured my birthday would be a great time to stop and reflect back on an epic year.  Most importantly I have been blessed with an incredible family.  My son is now eleven and funnier than ever!  My wife not only is an amazing wife, but an incredible work partner.

Many years ago my family and I started celebrating the day I karate kicked my way into the world by holding Mattober Fest during the month of October.  More than just a birthday celebration, it is a revelry of all things awesome!  So without delay, here are some of the most memorable moments of my life this year while holding a camera.

The Pancake Pantry

Matthew Noel

In many resort towns, it's easy to get overwhelmed by the over hyped attractions and restaurants.  Gatlinburg, Tennessee is no different.  I think a fair description of it's close neighbor, Pigeon Forge, is Las Vegas for the Bible Belt.  That being said, I was pleasantly surprised when I visited this haven of pancake deliciousness on my family vacay during Mardi Gras.  Not only was I pleasantly surprised by this 1960 pancake powerhouse, but everyone at my table instantly became converts.  Below are the photographs that convey my experience at this everything from scratch institution.  You can see their menu and get directions at pancakepantry.com .

Buy Local

Matthew Noel

Fresh produce is always the best way to start off preparing for a delicious meal.  You now hear lots of chefs talking about a "farm to table" approach.   Look around in your neighborhoods and cities to find local farmers and farmers markets where you can meet the person who planted and picked what you will eat.

The Company Burger

Matthew Noel

If you are looking for a great burger, The Company Burger has you covered.  They use all natural beef that is butchered, ground and made into patties by hand.  They even make their own pickles and mayo. Don't miss out on the red onion rings or twice fried french fries.  Burger fans unite and celebrate this delicious feast of goodness The Company Burger has laid before us.  For Burger Freedom!

Spahr's American Craft Beer Dinner

Matthew Noel

Spahr's Seafood in Houma, La just held their third craft beer dinner.  Lead by Chef Minh Lee and craft beer expert Ron Swoboda, a very delicious and informative time was had by all whom attended.  Chef Lee paired a wide variety of flavors with an exceptional beer selection.  The dinner was an excellent value coming in at $65 for Hors D'oeuvres, a five course dinner, and six craft beers.  Below are photos and descriptions of the food and beverage.  Finding out more about Spahr's Seafood at www.spahrsseafood.com .

Chicken and Watermelon

Matthew Noel

I can say for sure I have never been to a place quite like this one.  Chicken and Watermelon in New Orleans has it's own swagger locked down.  Wrapper owned, it is the epitome of "get your munch on".  Just a warning, the mild sauce is hot!  You can find them on 3400 S. Claiborne Ave.

The Burger Project

Matthew Noel

I have have been wanting to try a photo like this ever since I saw the photography in the Modernist Cookbook.  I photographed all the components separately in the same light, then composited them together.  I think the result is really fun!  This was shot as part of a new look for Reef burgers & poboys in Houma, La.  Congrats to my friend and new owner Nick Davaine.

Find Us, Get a Button!

Matthew Noel

These past few weeks Becky and I have been so busy prepping for "The Best Chefs of Louisiana 2013".  Besides the photography, video, and slideshow, we took on managing the ACFNO's social media and became a GOLD level sponsor for the event.  This left me with little time to write.  So in honor of all those food photography fans, come up to Becky or myself and mention FINDING FLAVORS and we will give you a custom button for you to sport.  I just have a hand full, so get them early! We hope to see you at the event!

How To Photograph Gumbo

Matthew Noel

I was recently hired by W. L. Gaiennie Company to photograph for the Lafourche Parish Tourism board's new campaign "Dig In". What was needed was an enticing bowl of gumbo for some of their upcoming marketing and ads. Turn around time was tight. I think it was two or three days total. With the deadline looming my wife, Becky, and I got to work.

A Taste of Austin, Tx

Matthew Noel

The international association of culinary professionals, a.k.a. IACP, descended upon Austin this past June.  I was one of the many and was treated to a wonderful experience.  Austin has been on the map with the music / hipster scene for a while, but I never had the chance to experience what the hype was about.  During my week long stay I feel I had a complete Austin adventure, moustaches and all.

Below is my visual representation of the sights, sounds, and tastes I came across.
