A Bird's Eye View

Last month I had the opportunity to do some aerial photography for the Terrebonne Tourism Board. Living in the area I hadn't viewed my home town from above and it turned out to be spectacular! We even took off the doors the helicopter. The trip started out by circling downtown Houma, La and then heading out toward the Gulf of Mexico. The whole time I kept thinking that I can't believe I get to do this for a living. A couple of the photos are below. You can find out more about tourism in the area at houmatravel.com

Nikon D800 test video - Swamp

I just received my d800 and wanted to test the video mode in a real shooting situation. I took it out to a nature reserve near my house in south Louisiana along with my Nikon 24-70mm, Sigma 120-400mm, and tripod. I shot on neutral picture setting which lowers the contrast and helps keep dynamic range. I also used the 60 frames per second 720P movie setting for the slow motion shots. This was edited in Sony Vegas which handled the raw files quite well. There is a slight curves adjustment to bring back contrast and some sharpening. The music is courtesy of zero-project.gr. Last night the American Culinary Federation New Orleans chaperter held their annual "Best Chefs of Louisiana" award ceremony and fundraising gala. What a spectacular group of chef and congratulations to all.

I was on an assignment for the Terrebonne Parish Tourism Board videoing and photographing a Mardi Gras float den. This is where they prep the floats for their parade. Sharron Pontiff was kind enough to spend some time on camera explaining what goes on behind the scenes. The video follows.

I was recently hired by W. L. Gaiennie Company to photograph for the Lafourche Parish Tourism board's new campaign "Dig In". What was needed was an enticing bowl of gumbo for some of their upcoming marketing and ads. Turn around time was tight. I think it was two or three days total. With the deadline looming my wife, Becky, and I got to work.

I finished up a shoot at the Roosevelt Hotel in New Orleans and needed something for dinner. I took a trip down the beautiful lobby to Chef John Besh's Domenica restaurant. I had eaten there before and knew it would be good. Eating by myself I wanted to try some menu items that some dinner companions may not order. I'm glad I went the adventurous route. It turned out to be delicious. Photos follow.

Top Secret Pizza Photos

Chef Adolfo Garcia just opened not one, but two new restaurants. I was invited to sample the first pizzas out of the oven that was shipped direct from Naples, Italy! I can say that the true neapolitan pizza is amazing. From the dough to authentic topping, chef will be treating his guests with waves of flavor that could previously only be found in Italy. I can't wait for my second visit. Ancora is the new pizzeria /salumeria and High Hat Cafe serves food from the Mississippi Delta region.
